El León Literary Arts, a private foundation in Berkeley, asked us in 2015 to design, typeset, and lay out Here and Gone, a book by Thomas Farber. Copublishers were Andrea Young Arts and Manoa Books. Typesetting and layout were done in QuarkXPress. The base typeface was Warnock Pro, and the display typeface Blue Island; the wavelike glyph is from Webdings.

This logo appears on the Projects / Publications page of the Manoa Foundation, whose site we overhauled. We changed the site in several ways, trying to give it a fresher, more vibrant look and a structure that was stronger and easier to use.

Poems and Essays from an Ordinary Room

We were fortunate to work on this 2014 project for El León Literary Arts, a private foundation. El León asked us to design, typeset, and lay out the book. Word processing was done in Microsoft Word, and typesetting and layout in Adobe InDesign. The base typeface was Garamond Pro, and the display typeface Warnock Pro.

Poems and Essays from an Ordinary Room was written by Lawrence Levin, a doctor and former Hawai‘i resident. We received the manuscript in January and finished production in March. While we were working on it, Mr. Levin passed away after a long illness. We continued work on Poems and Essays with newfound purpose, attempting to produce a book that would complement Mr. Levin’s original wisdom and compassionate voice.

The completed book has 192 pages and over two dozen images; included are photographs by Mr. Levin’s brother, Wayne, and reproductions of paintings and sketches by artist Rebecca Horne.

Our thanks to Thomas Farber and Kit Duane, of El León Literary Arts, for the opportunity to work with them on this project.
